Issue
The client has a wireless signal on their Chromebook, and they may even be able to see one or two pages they commonly use (e.g. Neuqua Student, Google Drive), but when they try to connect to any other site, they get a message that says they don't have an Internet connection.Likely Cause
The client is not currently authenticated (logged in) in to the Lightspeed Web filter, and they need to do so before they can use the Internet. The web filter login page is not automatically authenticating the client account on start up.Lightspeed Systems, the company that makes our filtering software is working on a solution to fix the issue that so that Google accounts in Chrome will automatically authenticate and this should be less of a problem in the future.
Check For These Things
Is the Chromebook wireless connected to the G network?
Has the wireless setting been disabled?
How to Fix It
Open a new tab and type an address for a news site or other site with content that is frequently updated (e.g. cnn.com). This should trigger the Lightspeed Web Filter login page.
The client should be able to click the Student link and will either be redirected to the requested page or they will have to re-enter their password for their Google account.
Also...
All students should power their computer all the way down if they are using their Chromebook at home. This process of automatically authenticating them through the filter occurs when users turn their Chromebook on and login at school. So powering all the way down, and not just shutting the lid, should be a daily habit, just like charging the Chromebook
